TATE ETC. What's the best film you've seen recently?
CHRISTELLE OYIRI Tommy (1975) by Ken Russell. It's absolutely incredible - a beautiful, musical, star-studded, psychedelic exploration of childhood trauma. Also, let’s talk about the set design and mise en scène: simply gorgeous! It’s based on The Who’s 1969 album of the same name. I wish bands and musicians were still making these kinds of high-concept, block-buster rock operas.
ETC. What record are you excited to play at parties right now?
CO Right now, I’m playing a record called OK Cowboy (2005) by Vitalic, which I used to blast out on my way to elementary school. It’s an incredible journey of an album and represented a real musical shift in French electronic music, in my opinion. I also keep listening to the track ‘No Surprise’ (1994) by Kerri Chandler and I am in love with music byEsDeeKid, Lauren Duffus and Wraith9 as well. They’re all young UK legends in the making.
ETC. What item of clothing or accessory could you not live without?
CO An Ottolinger bag. I like how it resembles a ceramic sculpture and weirds people
out, until I let them touch it and they realise it’s actually made of silicone. I love this element of surprise, as well as how it automatically makes an ‘OK’ outfit into something artful and interesting.
ETC. Where is your favourite place to get away from it all (in the world or online)?
In the ‘real world’ my favourite places are the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean. I’d also add Ishigaki in the Okinawa islands in the south of Japan. Online, I love to get away from it all by watching the American sitcom Abbott Elementary or random documentaries.
ETC. What’s hot and what’s not in 2025?
CO Hot:
- Faja chic: post-surgical compression garments turned into clubwear or day outfits
chic: post-surgical compression garments turned into clubwear or day outfits - Post-AI imperfections: glitches and filters that mimic analogue errors
- Caribbean cinema: filmmakers from Martinique and Guadeloupe are making a comeback in French theatres this year with films like Zion directed by Nelson Foix, Magma directed by Cyprien Vial, and Jean-Claude Flamand-Barny’s Frantz Fanon biopic
- Fanzines
- Sunbathing without sunscreen for three minutes (when it’s not too hot!)
- Genuine kindness and sense of community – it starts with your friends and the people immediately around you
- Aluminium and stainless steel
- Theatre
Not:
- One-size-fits-all ‘wellness’ routines
- The ‘clean girl’ aesthetic
- Genocides
- The term ‘red pill’ – it’s like the non-threatening IKEA × Matrix way of saying ‘racist and misogynistic’
- Being cliquey
- Over-processed DJ edits – raw blends feel more chaotic and alive
- Pretending to be goth now, because it’s cool, when you were bullying goth and emo kids in high school
