This first exhibition of Francis Gruber work to be shown at the Tate was of particular interest, especially as it included fine examples of paintings and drawings covering every period of the artist's adult life, from his twentieth year until his early death at the age of thirty-six.
The exhibition was possible thank to to the untiring efforts of the artist's widow, Madame Georges Gruber, who selected the pictures and  gave practical assistance.
