Against the backdrop of Tate Liverpool鈥檚 Tracing the Century exhibition, this unique course considers the question, what is drawing? Through a combination of practical workshops and group discussions led by local artist Steve Ashton, the course will respond to the exhibition's exploration of the many different ways of drawing, from the tradional preparatory sketch to the experimental use of line.

Participants will analyse drawing processes and techniques, experiment with drawing as a creative medium, and be guided to produce work inspired by artists in Tracing the Century. This course will use the exhibition as a starting point to stimulate critical engagement and creativity.

Session 1: Working on the Edge -聽Saturday 17 November聽

Working on the Edge will begin the process of exploring how we see three dimensional form and space, and how this can be heightened and enriched by the practice of translating such observations into two dimensional images. The emphasis this session will be on the use of line.聽

Session 2: Line into Space -聽Saturday 24 November

This session takes it鈥檚 cue from Paul Klee鈥檚 famous phrase 鈥渢aking a line for a walk鈥. 聽The session will explore the movement of line, hand and eye co-ordination, rhythm and gesture.聽

Session 3: Object in Space-Establishing a Physical Presence - Saturday 1 December

Object In Space鈥揈stablishing A Physical Presence moves on from the use of line and outline to tonal drawing, working drawing into a different realm than that of line, exploring a wider range of softer materials and effects.聽

Session 4: Spatial Exploration - Saturday 8 December

The final session will extend and question the nature of the 鈥減icture plane鈥, combining multiple viewpoints and moments into a single image.聽

Drawing the Line can be enjoyed as a complete series of 4 workshops or as individual sessions. 聽Price includes materials, and no previous experience is necessary. Booking is essential and course fees are non-refundable.
