This half-day seminar will explore some of the most pressing issues for art history and art museums today

This seminar will explore Liverpool’s historic and current position in questioning colonial legacies and Tate Liverpool’s role in reimagining the art museum in the context of transnationalism.

How can museums reflect on the ongoing and contested legacies of colonialism? How can they help acknowledge the transnational connections that have developed across unequal yet also profoundly connected artistic spheres and societies in the 20th and 21st centuries? How can museums give a new visibility to the forgotten figures of art history, while also acknowledging ongoing blind spots? And how can artists, curators, researchers and museum visitors work together to help address and redress them?

These are some of the questions that the seminar will examine with a view to develop transnational, geographically and culturally inclusive perspectives on art that do not erase, but critically re-evaluate the legacies of colonialism.
