BMW Tate Live Exhibition Procession

29 March 2020 at 12.00–14.00
Portrait of the artist Okwui Okpokwasili

Okwui Okpokwasili © John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

Join Okwui Okpokwasili in a procession across the Turbine Hall on the final day of the BMW Tate Live Exhibition

Expanding on her work Sitting on a Man’s Head, staged in the East Tank, audiences are invited to participate in creating an improvisational public song through gesture. As the procession moves from a collective, considered walk, Okpokwasili invites new forms of kinship within the work.

The artist asks, can a shared creative practice be generative and generous? Can it be instructive in imagining new possibilities of communal relations?

Biography

Okwui Okpokwasili was born in New York, USA, in 1972 as a child of Nigerian migrants. She came to prominence with her one-woman show Bronx Gothic (2014) and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2018.
