鈥婽he third night of the BMW Tate Live Exhibition is dedicated to a special live performance by pioneering artist and musician Phill Niblock, who was pivotal in defining the intermedia approach of the 1960s and聽70s.
Niblock presents the last two works in his Environments series, ground-breaking experiments shown in New York City between 1968 and 1972 that combine multi-screen film projection, 35mm colour slides, and dance with original sound. The film materials have been reworked in the intervening years, migrating to video and digital media and will be premiered with new sound compositions played live. Don鈥檛 miss this rare opportunity to experience Niblock鈥檚 revolutionary experiments in the immersive presentation of film, music and聽dance.
About the聽artist
Phill Niblock (b. 1933, USA) is an artist whose fifty-year career spans minimalist and experimental music, film and photography. Since 1985, he has served as director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation for avant-garde music based in New York with a branch in Ghent, and curator of the foundation鈥檚 record label XI. Known for his thick, loud drones of music, Niblock鈥檚 signature sound is filled with microtones of instrumental timbres that generate many other tones in the performance space. In 2013, his diverse artistic career was the subject of a retrospective realised in partnership between Circuit (Contemporary Art Centre Lausanne) and Mus茅e de l鈥橢lys茅e. The following year Niblock was honoured with the prestigious Foundation for Contemporary Arts John Cage聽Award.
