In 10000 Gestures, each dancer performs a series of gestures which vanish as soon as they are performed. It is a storm of unrepeated movements impossible to hold on to.
Considering the tension between choreography and concept, Charmatz describes how ‘the more gestures there are, the more precise they need to be, the more clearly separated from one another, the clearer their contours, their boundaries.’
Balancing the space and time needed for each gesture to be experienced, 10000 Gestures is delivered at high speed by 24 dancers.
A series of free events will allow audiences to explore 10000 Gestures more deeply.
10000 Gestures was first shown at the Manchester International Festival and Volksbühne Berlin in 2017.
This event is part of a special weekend programme developed for Tate in support of the presentation of Boris Charmatz’s recent work.
