In this practical drawing session led by artist Clara Drummond you will tour The C C Land exhibition: Pierre Bonnard: The Colour of Memory while creating a sketchbook inspired by Bonnard’s own sketchbooks.
Focussing on the small pocket diaries that Pierre Bonnard drew in on a daily basis Clara Drummond will show how they reveal a great deal about the artist and the role of drawing and memory in his work. ‘A moment intensely seen and intensely felt….’ is how Pierre Bonnard described the two minute drawings that he made in these diminutive diaries. He drew everyday scenes: the people, places, objects, interiors, landscapes and the weather. These rapid observations of the world around him played a vital role in the creation of his paintings, not only as an aide memoir but also as experiments in composition, scale, subject, mark making and the depiction light. No one, Clara believes, can tell you how to draw. Instead you can learn by practising and discarding preconceived ideas. She will encourage you to fill pages, make a mess, take risks, try things out, be fearless and be curious, but most of all to look and to respond to what you see. Clara will talk about Bonnard’s sketchbooks and how they inspired her, as well as showing images from Bonnard’s sketchbooks to spark your creativity.
Clara is the author of Drawing & Seeing, Create your Own Sketchbook, a book about keeping your own sketchbook, a drawn diary of your daily life and what strikes you.
