Inspired by his latest project, an investigation into the photographic archive of the Solovestsky Labour Camp (1923 - 1937), the earliest forced labour camp in the GULAG system, Tolmachev seeks to explore the idea that sound, orality and interpretative performance can bring us closer to the understanding of a photographic work. During this workshop, participants will examine and interpret the seen and unseen within photographs from their own family collections and archives. ​
Participants are encouraged to bring their own selection of personal photographs to this workshop.
This workshop is open to all, no previous experience with creative practice is required. We also encourage participants to attend the morning discussion Soviet Russia in Contemporary Art.
