Dear Pepi,
I’ve been meaning to send you these photos of the ‘Flüchtlingen’ [Refugees] for a while now; I’m also taking the opportunity to send you the few photos I have left. I have the numbers for them here, so I can always order reprints. Unfortunately not of the ‘Lamentation’, which is gone for good. I still have the painting, and various other compositions; hopefully we’ll be able to photograph them in a couple of days. There should then be a decent number of photos.
The ‘Flüchtlingen’ belongs to the Lethbridge family (Guildford), and they treat it like the crown jewels (they also have a few less important things that I’ve done; I have several touching letters of thanks and appreciation from them). The war paintings, made in 1941-42, were an auspicious beginning that came to nothing as a result of every conceivable misfortune. They were exhibited once during the war, at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. With the exception of the ‘Flüchtlingen’, which has been mounted on a new canvas, they have been mouldering and flaking away ever since.
The ’Revolution’, the Russian one, from June, has not yet been photographed either; in an outburst of nervous energy back then I let out hoarse cry and completely lost my voice, and with it my anaemic conversation.
