Dear Pepi,
Many thanks belatedly for the kind letters from so many interesting parts of our beautiful world. At present I’m tormenting myself over some old material from the pre-hospital period. As a master in the art of self-inflicted torture, I simply must put them in decent shape before they go to the refuse authorities. (One of the paintings, ‘Blutübertragung’ [blood transfusion], was bought by John Levy. That was months ago, and the painting is still here, but that at least has been saved from the rubbish heap.)
Just got a report from the hospital by telephone. God-damn kidney failure still, though I’m actually feeling very well and have been walking miles and miles and even painting – vigorously.
Still have to keep to my diet, weigh anything containing protein (one and a half ounces of meat or fish etc etc), and I gorge myself on honey and the other sweet things I’m allowed to eat.
For your birthday, which of course falls in this month of many birthdays, I wish you all the very best and shall drink to your health (another thing I’m allowed to do) on the seventeenth.
