Get magical in this artist-led workshop exploring our relationships with the environment using Surrealist techniques

Tate researcher Emma Sharples (Cambridge) and artist Greg Humphries (Cornwall) present this workshop on magical and ecological thinking. Discover the extraordinary work of British artist and occultist Ithell Colquhoun (1906-88) and experiment with her methods of image-making.

Part presentation, discussion session and making activity, the session is inspired by °ä´Ç±ô±ç³Ü³ó´Ç³Ü²Ô’s artistic and spiritual practices. It will explore queer and feminist approaches to painting, considering the artist’s imagery, methods and writings in the context of environmental thinking. Participants will have a chance to explore agency through the use of Surrealist automatic techniques including superautomatism and °ä´Ç±ô±ç³Ü³ó´Ç³Ü²Ô’s own invention ‘parsemage’.

Tate St Ives is located on Porthmeor Beach. There is a ramp up to the gallery entrance alongside stairs with a handrail.
