Take part in a face painting workshop with Lucy Stein and Sarah Hartnett, exploring images from the collective unconscious

For Ad Minoliti’s Feminist School of Painting, Lucy and Sarah’s workshop will explore imagery from Carl Jung's idea of a collective unconscious through face painting. Drawing from Jungian Psychoanalysis and the idea of the archetype, they will guide the group through their own archetypal imagery and how to apply these as 'masks'. Recognising archetypal behaviours and patterns can be one step on the quest for personal transformation. Which images relate to your performative self, or make you feel a sense of belonging?

All experience levels are welcome, including anyone who hasn’t painted before. The painting sessions are modest and informal, with gentle guidance offered. Participants will be provided with face paints, brushes and mirrors, although you’re welcome to bring your own. Participants are encouraged to bring print outs of their chosen imagery.

Inspired by Ad Minoliti’s belief in the belief of the importance of the activity of painting and embracing the ‘Happy Accident’ the sessions are intended to provide space to freely engage in a thoughtful activity with others.

Between November 2019 and May 8th 2023 Sarah Hartnett and Lucy Stein are undertaking a pilgrimage along the Mary ley line which runs from near Lands’ End in Cornwall to Hopton in Norfolk. They produce artwork from their findings along the way, comprising of painting, sculpture, performance, film and music. Lucy (b. Oxford) is a painter based in St Just, Cornwall. Sarah (b. Sussex) is a multimedia artist studying for a Masters in Social Anthropology at SOAS in London.
